Dr. Thomishia Booker launched Hey Carter! Books after being disappointed in the lack of representation for Black boys in children’s books. Her brand and books are inspired by her son, Carter and focused on building self-identity in young Black boys. She has a master’s in social work and a Doctorate in Education Counseling Psychology. Dr. Booker began her career working in early childhood mental managing 0-5 programs. She is a member of the Black Literary Collective (Building Leaders and Activists with Collective Knowledge) a group of Black authors in the Bay Area working to decolonize educational spaces to ensure Black children have access to culturally relevant content and pedagogy. Thomishia’s work is recently featured in the Netflix original series Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices.  She is passionate about closing opportunity gaps for Black children and sees her work as necessary for community to thrive and grow.  She is committed to showing the world exactly what Brown Boy Joy is!

 

Dr. Booker specializes in culturally relevant curriculum, early conversations about diversity and building self confidence and pride among school aged children. She is available staff in-service/training, classroom readings, school wide assemblies, in-class activities, and customized programming.
